Envelope filters have a long and illustrious history in the effects world, and it’s important to recognize the beginnings of any effect. The Seamoon Funk Machine was one the first such pedals on the market back in the early ‘70s, and while its heart was in the right place, it was rather difficult to wrangle. Eventually, a second version came about that fixed some issues but not all. In an effort to improve all quality-of-life aspects, our Changeling keeps the original circuit but implements the best changes from the revision while dramatically improving the usability of the first version. Every aspect of the envelope filtering has been tweaked to keep the action harmonious—the decay, attack, frequency response, filter driver and more have been adjusted for optimal filtering settings, resulting in the widest variety of applications across all instruments. This includes a JFET input buffer circuit, introduced in the second version to play nice with Rhodes pianos but cleans up the response of any incoming signal, be it bass, guitar or keys.
