Dioscorea Elephantipes
Common Name: Elephant’s Foot / Turtle Shell Plant

Dioscorea Elephantipes is a rare and iconic caudiciform succulent known for its spectacular, woody caudex that resembles the cracked shell of a tortoise or the rough foot of an elephant—hence its name. This slow-growing plant develops a sculptural dome over time, with geometric plates that give it a truly prehistoric look.

During its active growing season, it produces delicate vines with heart-shaped green leaves that climb and sprawl in all directions, making it both rugged and elegant in form. Native to South Africa, it thrives in dry climates and is perfect for collectors of unusual, bonsai-style succulents.

☀ Light Requirements
Enjoys bright, indirect sunlight or partial sun. Outdoors, morning sun and afternoon shade are ideal. Indoors, place near a bright window for best growth.

💧 Watering Needs
Water sparingly during the growing season (usually fall to spring), when leaves are present. Once the plant goes dormant and drops its vines, reduce watering significantly or stop completely until new growth appears. Always ensure excellent drainage.

🌡 Temperature Tolerance
Not frost-tolerant. Keep above 45°F. For cold climates or winter shipments, we recommend adding a [Heat Pack] to your order.

✨ Special Features
Tortoise-Shell Caudex – One of the most recognizable and collectible caudiciforms.
Heart-Shaped Leaves – Vining foliage adds contrast and beauty during active growth.
Bonsai-Like Form – Perfect for shallow pots and artistic displays.

Other Common Names:
Elephant’s Foot, Turtle Shell Plant, Hottentot Bread

This cactus will ship bare root and will be ready to place directly in a well draining soil mix like our Custom Cactus Mix.

Photos in the listings unless otherwise specified are representative of the plant that will be sent to you.
However, Plants grow differently and each plant may vary slightly in shape, size, growth pattern, etc.
Of course, if you receive a plant that you are dissatisfied with please reach out to us. We want to make it right!

If temperatures near you are below 45℉ we highly recommend adding a Heat Pack to your order.
If temperatures where you live will be much lower than 20℉ even heat packs may not work. You may consider waiting until things warm up a bit. We know you love your plants just like we do and we wouldn't want any of them to freeze.

Aussie loves it!
Size: 5.5 Ounce (Pack of 1)
This dog chew has been a lifesaver. Our Australian Shepherd is about to turn 11 months. I started giving him the Whole Paws Lactose and Grain Free dog chew about 3 months ago. He is an aggressive chewer and super persnickety about his food. This chew lasts forever. I usually buy the medium for him. The X large is almost too big for him, but when it is all our Whole Foods has, I get it.

Fun
My dogs love these ducks. They are pretty durable but I have had three dogs at a time and they all love them. Our new puppy has taken over the duck from my older dog and she is not happy.

Such a favorite we had to buy backups!
My pup LOVES this toy, as well as my roommates pup as well! Found first in a dive bin store, we knew we had to find the seller and get more. So far we have 3 with 2 of those being in circulation and the third as a back up hidden away. We have had to sew a few holes, the nose is a favorite with ours, but otherwise holds up quiet well!

Saving This For Future Play
This is very similar to an older green platypus dog toy that my puppies managed to destroy in record time. Keeping that in mind I’m going to wait awhile before letting them play with it. It’s adorable and doesn’t deserve an untimely death. They’ve managed to chew holes into two supposedly tough toys in less than a day. Their permanent teeth are coming in so maybe there’s hope for the future.

Not as pictured
From the picture, this duck looked stuffed and full. Instead it is completely flat.
