Meadow Arnica (Arnica chamissonis) - Meadow Arnica, also known as Mountain Daisy, is a native perennial herb found in meadows across North America, from the Pacific Northwest and Canadian prairies to the western and coastal regions of the USA. Traditionally, Arnica has been used for its medicinal properties, particularly in relieving tendonitis, arthritis, and general body pain. Topical creams made from the flowers are common, while internal use is strongly discouraged due to the toxic compound helenalin. Perhaps this explains why deer generally avoid the plant. Hardy to zone 2, Meadow Arnica reaches up to 20 inches tall, producing cheerful golden-yellow flowers from early June through late September. It thrives in full sun and a variety of soil types, is drought-tolerant, and attracts a wide range of pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Arnica is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a native, non-invasive alternative to ornamental daisies.

Growing Instructions: Meadow Arnica can be slow and somewhat challenging to germinate. Cold germination is recommended to improve success. Seeds may be direct sown outdoors in late summer or early fall for natural winter conditioning.
For indoor sowing, start seeds 8–10 weeks before last frost. Cold stratify seeds for 4–6 weeks before sowing. Sow seeds on the soil surface and press lightly—do not cover, as light is required for germination. Keep soil evenly moist and in bright light. Seeds typically germinate in 14–28 days.
Harden off seedlings before transplanting outdoors. Space plants 30–45 cm apart in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil.
