Monstera adansonii, commonly known as the Swiss Cheese Vine, is a much-loved tropical climber admired for its unique, perforated leaves and easy-going nature. A member of the Araceae family and native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this species embodies the wild, untamed beauty of the jungle while remaining compact and manageable indoors.

Its heart-shaped leaves are deep green and adorned with natural oval-shaped holes (fenestrations), giving the plant its iconic “Swiss cheese” appearance. As the plant matures, the leaves become larger and more intricately perforated, creating a delicate yet dramatic texture. Monstera adansonii is both a climber and trailer, making it perfect for hanging baskets, tall shelves, or trained up a moss pole for a lush, vertical statement.

Lively, tropical, and wonderfully versatile, the Swiss Cheese Vine brings instant jungle charm to any home — a true favourite among plant enthusiasts and interior designers alike.

Monstera adansonii – Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, while too little light may slow growth and reduce leaf perforation. East- or north-facing windows are ideal, or filtered light through sheer curtains in brighter rooms.

Watering

Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Water when the top 2–3 cm of soil feels dry. In winter, reduce watering slightly while maintaining gentle moisture. Always ensure good drainage to prevent root rot — Monstera adansonii prefers to dry out a little between waterings.

Temperature and Humidity

Temperature: Prefers warmth between 18–28 °C; avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15 °C.
Humidity: High humidity (60–80%) encourages healthy growth and glossy foliage. Mist regularly, use a humidifier, or group with other tropical plants to create a humid environment.

Soil and Potting

Use a rich, airy, and well-draining mix — compost combined with perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir works perfectly. This mimics its natural epiphytic conditions, providing aeration while retaining gentle moisture. Repot every 1–2 years in spring to refresh nutrients and promote strong root growth.

Feeding

Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Avoid over-fertilising, which can cause leaf burn or salt build-up. Suspend feeding in autumn and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Prune to control length and encourage bushier growth. Cuttings root easily in water or moist soil, making propagation simple. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and enhance their natural gloss. Rotate the plant occasionally for even light exposure and balanced growth.

Growth and Maturity

A moderately fast grower, Monstera adansonii can reach 1.5–2 metres indoors when supported. Its vining habit allows it to climb or trail, producing larger and more fenestrated leaves as it matures. With the right care, it develops into a lush, cascading feature that instantly transforms interiors.

Common Issues

  • Yellow leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.

  • Brown edges: Low humidity or inconsistent watering.

  • Sparse growth: Insufficient light.

  • Pests: Occasionally affected by thrips or spider mites — treat with neem oil and maintain humidity.

Background and Benefits

Native to the humid tropical forests of Central and South America, Monstera adansonii grows as an epiphyte, climbing trees in search of dappled light and absorbing moisture from the air. Its natural fenestrations allow wind and light to pass through the leaves in the dense rainforest canopy — an adaptation that also makes it highly decorative in indoor spaces.

Like other Monsteras, it’s an excellent natural air purifier, filtering toxins and improving indoor air quality. Symbolically, its perforated leaves represent adaptability and growth — a reminder of resilience and flexibility in changing environments.

    Cheaper than shoes!
Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion, Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion
Instant hit with a dog that likes chewing shoes! This is a much cheaper alternative than a new pair of shoes. They state it is indestructible but at the same time the directions state when it reaches a certain chewed up point to take it away. So obviously this is destructible but it does allow for a lot of chewing. I can not personally attest to the flavor but it must be good because the dog wanted this chew before i even unwrapped it. It is somewhat ugly in both color and shape but I have had no complaints from the dog! I also appreciate that this can be put in the dishwasher to clean. To be honest i have never considered that with other toys and I do appreciate that it can be placed in the dishwasher. Most importantly, this lasts, the dog is in love with this, there are multiple limbs for the dog to chew. It’s his new favorite toy and worth every bit of the cost!

    Durable
Size: Medium & Large, Color: Red Scorpion
This bone has proved to be durable and tasty (per our Labrador). She chews and chews with barely a dent. I’m guessing the flavor is good because it’s still her go-to bone after almost a week. Beware of your pet dropping it on your toes though as it is quite hard.

The ONLY Bones/Chews Dog-Approved in Our House!
Flavor Name: Original Jerky, Size: X-Large
We have 2 purebred pitbulls, both adult males who weigh between 75-80 pounds. We bought a huge assortment of bones, treats, and chews when we first got our boys (they're rescues, and we got them at the same time). They strongly favored these Marrowchews, even over other, imitation products of different brands. We actually didn't know they had marrow INSIDE the bones for quite some time, and as soon as we realized that, we understood why our dogs loved them so much! The way the marrow is embedded in the bone, but a ways in from either end, is really clever. The dogs can surely smell it long before they can taste it, and it seems to keep them really interested and motivated at first. Then, they get to the actual marrow, and they are working on these bones non-stop until it's completely gone. The way they are made is also really unique; they sort of 'splinter' as they get chewed, and it actually helps with doggie dental care, cleaning the teeth and massaging the gums. There is no mess with these bones, no pieces flaking or chunking off, anything like that. They are also completely odor-free. With other bones/chews, they'll start them, but lose interest really quickly, and never so much as look at those again. These specific Marrowchews are truly the ONLY ones that keep our dogs interested, and for a significant amount of time, too. They'll work on the XL sizes daily throughout the day for a total of 1-2 hours, and they last a couple of months, easily. And keep in mind, these are pretty aggressive chewers! HIGHLY recommend these, and the price on Amazon is the best anywhere!

    Durable and fun
    Flavor Name: Beef, Size: Medium/Large
I have two dogs and I only bought one bone over a month ago. They’ve both been chewing on it and it’s held up really well. I wouldn’t say they’re aggressive chewers, but they do like chewing. They’re still picking it up and using it, so they’re definitely not bored with it. As for me, it’s been a pretty great buy.

    Tough Chew!
Flavor Name: Original Jerky, Size: Medium
Sporn is a very tough chew. We have a 22pound Beagle 1 year old. She spend little time working on the Hard plastic that encases the marrow. Now I don't doubt there are some dogs that would chew this mindlessly for the small marrow treat. It is not for my pup! She needs more play to keep at it. A TOUGH CHEW would be better slightly less thick and more marrow inside. I attached a string and had her whirly birding around chasing this bone but once we let go she has a 30 second interest. Not for every dog maybe for the big guys 100 lb brutus !
